What Makes a Great Family?
Part 3: Eat Together
In our current fast-paced, fast food world, it is important to be intentional about gathering together as a family around the table. We try to eat as many meals together as possible. Oftentimes the girls help prepare meals which makes sitting down to eat even more enjoyable as a family. It is focused time, where one of us is teaching the girls how to enjoy cooking. They are involved with the entire process from cooking, setting the table, and serving the food. All phones and devices are turned off and usually put away out of sight. The focused attention allows for real conversations to develop.
The intentional time goes beyond simply eating together, it is extended through times of crafting together, reading a book aloud, or playing sports and games. I take time throughout the month with each girl and teach them specific instructions on sewing, painting, or drawing. Jesse gives tips for hunting, hiking, exercise, or their specific sports of interests. Throughout the week I’ll read a book aloud while they color or build something with legos. We also play the Nintendo switch together for fun.
It is key to have uninterrupted time with each child and together as a family. It can be a learning time or simply a fun, relaxed time of growth together. The best memories are often spontaneous adventures.
